Luxury Lodges In Akagera National Park – Upmarket Hotels/Accommodation

Magashi Camp

Magashi opened in mid 2019, and provides high-end accommodation in a very scenic safari area. This new Rwanda safari camp is the only permanent accommodation option in the northern region of the park. This is a fantastic inclusion to a high-end Rwandan safari.

Magashi is owned and run by the same team who run a number of high-end safari camps throughout Southern and East Africa, including Bisate in the Volcanoes National Park.

Accommodation at Magashi Camp include;

  • Six tented-rooms that offer uninterrupted views over Lake Rwanyakazinga.
  • Inside, the tents are bright and airy, and thoughtfully furnished with neutral colours throughout.
  • There is a comfortable king-size or twin beds, a writing desk with tablet for guest use, and a refreshment station which is regularly replenished.
  • At the back of the tent you’ll find the en-suite bathroom with separate toilet and rainfall shower.
  • The tents are reached by long raised wooden walkways, and are very spread out.

Facilities and services at Magashi Camp include;

Open-plan lounge and dining area

  • This is found in the middle of the camp and is beautifully designed using natural materials and traditional Rwandan ‘imigongo’ murals, with the circular bar taking centre stage.
  • There is plenty of space and seating options and a number of interesting books for guests to browse.

Swimming pool and viewing deck

  • Just beyond the bar and dining area is a small swimming pool with sun loungers, and a viewing deck with convivial fire pit.

Food and drink

  • The quality, presentation and variety of food at Magashi Camp is very high.
  • There are no set meal times, and guests are encouraged to be as relaxed as they wish.
  • With advance notice special diets and requests can be catered.
  • For breakfast you can expect a buffet with hot items cooked to order.
  • Lunch can also be a buffet, with a number of fresh, colourful salads and light dishes to choose from. Deserts are on offer as well, and tend to be simple and flavourful such as a refreshing sorbet, perfect in the midday heat.
  • Dinner is served a la carte, with a couple of options for each course. Orders are taken a few hours earlier, prior to heading out on the afternoon game drive to allow the kitchen sufficient time to prepare.

Akagera Game Lodge

Perched on a hill at the southern tip of the Akagera Park, Akagera Game lodge also offers fantastic accommodation to visitors on a vacation in Rwanda.

It has beautiful views of Lake Ihema and the smaller Lake Shikani. The lodge is located just 5 kilometer from the park’s south entrance.

Accommodation at Akagera Game Lodge include;

A total of 60 air-conditioned rooms with en suite bathrooms.

The rooms are decorated in contemporary Rwandanese style.

The rooms include 30 Standard Rooms and 30 Blacony Rooms.

Standard Rooms

The 30 standard rooms at Akagera Game Lodge  has en suite facilities and each has been decoarated in contemporary African decor.

These rooms can booked with double or twin bed bed configurations.

They are on the ground floor and 2 children under the ages of 12 can also be accommodated in these rooms on rollaway beds.

Balcony Rooms

These 30 en-suite balcony rooms has been decorated in a contemporary African décor and can be booked with twin or double configuration.

The balconys rooms are found on the upper level and does not accommodate children.

Facilities and services at Akagera Game Lodge include

Large reception area, dotted with African carvings and pieces of art, and incorporates a small curio shop.

Up a spiral staircase you’ll find the bar – with chunky wooden bar stools lining a long wooden bar, some chairs and tables, and a TV.

The bar opens out onto a wooden terrace which overlooks the pool below.

The large restaurant also has an outside decked area where meals can be served.

Outside, set in extensive tropical gardens, are two floodlit tennis courts that guests can use for free, a children’s play area, and a small children’s pool, as well as a lovely big circular swimming pool with sunloungers overlooking the lake.

A small massage area completes the picture.

Food & drink

The food is good and tasty.

Breakfast consists of fruit, followed by eggs cooked to order.

Lunch is from an à la carte menu that includes items such as grilled chicken and chips, pizzas, burgers, samosas and salads.

Dinner, too, is usually à la carte, but the manager told us that if they get very busy they may put on a buffet. You can enjoy grilled tilapia (a fish found in Lake Kivu) with chips and salad.

Fully stocked; offers cold and warm alcoholic drinks, with fridge for non-alcoholic drinks. The bar opens out onto a wooden terrace which overlooks the pool below

Communications

Akagera Game Lodge has Wi-Fi in the reception and bar area and internet terminals for guests who don’t have their own laptops.

There are TVs in the bedrooms and in the bar.

Security measures

Akagera Game Lodge has security guards on the gate 24 hours a day.

There are no safes in the rooms, but valuables can be kept in the manager’s safe.

Fire safety

There are fire hoses throughout the hotel; these are checked and maintained on a regular basis.

Laundry facilities

Laundry can be done for an extra charge. Items are machine-washed and dried.

Ruzizi Tented Lodge

Ruzizi is a luxury eco-lodge located on the banks of Lake Ihema. Since it was opened in 2012, the camp has proved a welcome addition to Akagera National Park.

It’s a simple, eco-friendly lodge and located in a good position to explore the varying landscapes of Akagera. It was designed to blend in with its surroundings to ensure guests connect with nature.

During construction, trees and vegetation were left undisturbed when possible. Some natural elements have been incorporated into the structure, and many of Ruzizi’s decorations and furniture were hand-crafted by local artisans and cooperatives.

Accommodation Ruzizi Tented Lodge include;

A total of 9 tents that accommodates a maximum of 20 guets and  each tent boasts;

  • An en-suite bathroom with hot and cold running water,
  • A bathtub or outdoor shower,
  • A dressing area, and
  • A cozy queen bed (alternatively, guests can request two twin beds, and camp beds can be added for children 15 and under).
  • All of Ruzizi’s tents enjoy shaded verandas containing campaign chairs, a tree-trunk table, and a hammock.

Dining area and a stunning deck
  • The dining area and a stunning deck hangs over the lake.
  • It contains a central fire pit
  • It is the perfect spot for a morning cup of coffee or post-dinner digestif.
Breakfast
  • Breakfast is also served starting from 5:30 early in the morning onwards in the dining room.
  • The staff at the lodge will also ask you the last night the time you wish to have breakfast.
  • It also comprises of coffee, tea, local fruits, and fresh juice, Eggs and the home-baked bread on order.
Lunch
  • The lodge also offers a lunch menu every day.
  • There is also a packed lunch that can be organized at the lodge, though a request has to be done a night before.
Dinner
  • This is normally from 6-7 pm and many of the guests come together to the lounge to enjoy a pre-dinner snack and some drinks.
  • At exactly 7:30 pm, they will serve dinner and it’s normally a set menu that differs on a daily basis which is prepared by the lodge chef.
  • Some common examples also include; the pot pie dishes, braai with the different meats and salads, different types of pizzas, and this is followed by a desert that’s prepared for the day.
  • In case of any food allergies, please inform the staff on your arrival in order to enable them to prepare for you sufficiently.
Electricity
  • This tented lodge runs mainly on a solar system.
Laundry
  • The lodge also offers the laundry services on a daily basis and therefore laundry needs a minimum of 24 hours to be completed.
